The SCDA Visits Palmer Motorsports Park for the First Time in 2020. New Novice Training Techniques are a Success.

6/22/2020 – Following a delayed start to the 2020 Sports Car Driving Association season, on Monday the organization saw a sold out crowd of drivers at the Palmer Motorsports Park in Ware, MA.  The High Performance Driver Education event hosted 5 run groups from Novice to Instructor and was the first time the SCDA used an updated instruction process. Drivers in all classes reported a great day running in the unique clockwise direction at the twisty track.

In today’s new reality of social distancing, the SCDA adapted to the challenges using the SCDA’s unique Lead/Shadow instruction process. Novice drivers and Instructors found the Lead/Shadow technique to be easy and informative. The SCDA Lead/Shadow format paired two Novice drivers with one Instructor for small team coaching and a unique on-track instruction experience.  Instructors lead Novice drivers throughout the four sessions, while modeling the perfect driving line and managing team speeds. Instructors used hand gestures and radio communication to execute maneuvers, letting each driver follow directly behind their team leader and learn the Point-By process for passing.  Novice drivers also benefited from live feedback given by trackside Instructors.  Following each session, a team debrief helped cement learning.

The SCDA looks forward to implementing the Lead/Shadow process going forward for the 2020 driving season.  Upcoming events include Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on June 27, Lime Rock Park on June 29 and Watkins Glen on July 13 and 14.
