Lime Rock Park - Turn by Turn Track Guide

Lime Rock Park – Turn by Turn Track Guide

Big Bend (T1 & T2)

T1 – Position the car fully driver’s left coming down the front straight. Using the brake markers on top of the guardrail, brake a little bit early but brake HARD. The goal is to overslow by the time you get to turn in. If successful, then and only then, incrementally work that brake point deeper going ¼ number board at a time, max. While we never want to drive above our means, there is an element to T1 being an entry speed corner. In that, it’s more about rolling speed through the apex, not over slowing too much too early and then subsequently jumping back on throttle. The car should be roughly in the center of the road going under the bridge, and we are looking for an “outdent” in the radius of the curbing as our apex point. We want to be next to the curb, not on top of it, with a slight amount of throttle.

T2 – On the way to T2 (which is defined as the section where Big Bend tightens up) we want to hug the apex of T1 all the way until the color change of the curbing on the driver’s right. At that point, we cease to hold the inside and we now open up the steering slightly to find the middle of the road. Eyes up and into the apex of T2 is critical as the overall trajectory at corner exit must be understood. Now in the middle of the road, we ease up on the throttle smoothly in sync with an addition of steering, asking the car to get down to the apex. The apex is clearly marked with “sealer” track repair, and your outside tires should drive over the sealer to confirm tightness to the apex. The eyes will tell the hands and feet if trajectory is good, allowing the driver to gradually reduce steering and smoothly squeeze throttle.

The Left Hander (T3)

There are truly many ways to take the left hander, and if each one done correctly, can net equal returns in both speed potential and risk management. While a book can be written about how to take the Left Hander, it’s solid advice to require that the driver to be in the process of gradually unwinding the steering wheel by the time they reach the apex, while still easily maintaining the left hand side of the road in anticipation of our line for T4. How we position the car earlier in the corner to benefit from this car placement is where the differences begin. A higher line on corner entry will yield a better angle to the apex, while a lower line will get you more grip, but at the expense of needing more steering to actually get to the apex. With either line, brake *reasonably* deep enough to keep the load energy over the front, trail braking for a longer percentage of the corner. Only squeeze throttle once your eyes tell your hands you can unwind steering and still maintain the left side of the road.

(T4)

This is a great corner for practicing hands and feet working together and in sync and is a standard “wide-tight-wide” line philosophy. With the car positioned fully on the left side of the road, the driver should be smoothly releasing throttle proportionately to turning steering in. The apex is roughly the last 1/4th of the curbing where positive camber is at its peak. Once again, the hands and feet work together and the throttle is squeezed smoothly out of the corner proportionally to the straightening of the steering. The line may be *slightly* earlier than what is intuitive, this is preferable so long as the hands turn in slowly to compensate and the eyes are up early towards the exit of the corner.

Uphill (T5)

Approaching the Uphill, utilize the brake markers on the left. The majority of our speed adjustment wants to be done in a straight line so that we can return to maintenance throttle by the time we turn in. This mitigates the load transfer front to rear after turn in, prioritizing a balanced platform in such a high speed corner. In anticipation of the compression of the hill, we can skew the line once again towards the slightly early side, knowing that we can (and want to!) turn harder on the compression of the hill, precisely when the car has the most grip potential. In essence the Uphill has 2 turn in points, one at the bottom of the hill initially into the corner, and another on the compression, when the car hits the hill and compresses on its suspension. The objective is to turn hard enough on the compression so that the steering can be dead straight going over the crest of the hill. It is critical from a safety perspective to be 100% straight as you crest.

West Bend (T6)

For this turn, air on the side of an earlier, lighter brake. Think brake pressure, not brake point. The turn is on the slightly earlier side, so long as the hands turn in slowly. The target after turn in is right next to (not on top of) the apex curbing, apex being defined by the access road alongside the curbing. Hold the apex curb until the eyes, looking downstream early, tell the hands its time to open steering out of the corner. As long as in the process of unwinding, the driver can smoothly squeeze throttle and tickle the exit curbing.

Downhill (T7)

Much like the Uphill, the Downhill corner has a unique compression point. Interestingly, the corner itself is not downhill, it’s actually flat, there’s just a hill before the turn. Speed adjustment wise, we do want our speed adjustment done and completed with a return to maintenance throttle before we turn in. When the car hits the compression point, it has extra grip potential. This is precisely when we want to make a decisive turn of the wheel, whereas the turn in is slightly late but sharp. On the way to the apex, it’s critical that our eyes are stretched far down the front straightaway. This will orient us sooner than later and help us choose a good line through the corner. Tight next to the apex curbing, there’s a great pocket of positive camber where the car likes to be. Only squeeze throttle once the eyes tell the hands they can straighten steering coming out of the corner.
